Carbine stocks fit a receiver extension (buffer tube). Mil-spec tubes are about 1.148" outside diameter. Commercial tubes are about 1.168". A mil-spec Magpul or B5 stock on a commercial tube rattles or will not lock. The title usually says MIL-SPEC or COMM.
