Scopes for 1000-yard shooting

A thousand-yard rifle needs a riflescope you can see with and dial (or hold) with. The usual box is 6-24x or 5-25x, first focal plane, a 30mm or 34mm tube, a side parallax knob, and exposed turrets that match the reticle (MOA clicks with an MOA reticle, or MRAD with MRAD). A red dot, a 1-6 / 1-8 LPVO, and a 3-9 duplex are the wrong type. The optic also does not turn a 5.56 AR into a 1000-yard gun — .308, 6.5 Creedmoor, and similar are the usual cartridges. We sell parts, not rifles or ammunition.

Magnification. 16x is the floor for a man-size plate. 20–25x is the comfortable working range. 3-18x (Sightmark Presidio) can work; you will live at the top of the zoom. 4-16x is tight. 5-30x and 8-32x are extra for small steel, not required. Search 6-24X or 5-25X.

First vs second focal plane. On FFP, the hashes stay true at every magnification — that is what you want if you hold mils or MOA at 1000. On SFP (Burris Fullfield 6-24x50 is one), the hashes are only true at one setting, usually max power. A hunting duplex with no hashes is for a 200-yard deer, not a 1000-yard hold.

Tube and elevation. A 1-inch tube (Riton 1 Conquer 6-24x50 FFP) has less internal “up.” Zero at 100 yards and you often run out of turret before 1000. A 20 MOA rail tilts the scope so more of that travel is usable up. 30mm is the common hunting/crossover size (Steiner H6Xi 5-30x50, Burris Veracity 5-25x50). 34mm (Athlon Helos BTR G2, Riton 5 Conquer, Leupold Mark 4HD, EOTech Vudu 5-25) usually has more travel. Leupold Mark 5HD is 35mm — 34mm rings will not clamp it. Match the rings to the tube; do not shim. See 30mm vs 1-inch rings.

Turrets and parallax. Exposed turrets you can count, with a zero stop so you can return to a 100-yard zero, are the 1000-yard setup. Capped hunting turrets are slower. Side parallax (PA / side focus) must go out to the target; a scope fixed at 100 or 150 yards will look fuzzy or walk at 1000. MOA on the turret is not the MOA number on a red-dot — that is dot size.

20 MOA rail. 0 MOA is a level rail. 20 MOA or 30 MOA is the tilt. Remington 700 short action and long action use different hole spacing — a SA rail will not line up on a LA receiver. Howa, Tikka, Savage 110, and Browning X-Bolt rails are their own SKUs. Rings still have to match the tube. See 700 scope bases.

A magnifier behind a red dot is still not 20x. Thermal scopes are a different job. A spotting scope is for the person next to the rifle, not the rifle. We do not sell serialized firearms.

Questions

Is a 4-16x or 3-18x scope enough for 1000 yards?

16–18x is the floor for a man-size plate. You can hit steel. 20–25x (6-24 or 5-25) is easier. A 3-9 hunting scope and a 1-6 LPVO are not 1000-yard optics.

Do I need first focal plane?

FFP if you hold mils or MOA at any magnification — the hashes stay true. SFP hashes are only true at one setting, usually max power. A duplex with no hashes is not a 1000-yard holdover reticle.

Do I need a 20 MOA rail?

Often yes if you zero at 100 yards and still need elevation at 1000, especially on a 1-inch tube. 0 MOA is a level rail. Remington 700 short action and long action are different parts.

Can I use a red dot or a 1-8 LPVO at 1000 yards?

No. A red dot is 1x. A magnifier behind it is still not 20x. A 1-6 or 1-8 LPVO is a close-to-mid gun optic, not a 1000-yard riflescope.
