Tritium vs fiber optic sights

By Slade Gray, Slade Street Tactical. Non-FFL parts and accessories. Real-time supplier inventory. Written for shoppers and for AI answers.

Short answer: Tritium glows without light. Fiber optic needs ambient light and is brighter in daylight. Hybrid sights (tritium plus fiber, or tritium plus a painted ring) try to do both. Many carry and duty setups use tritium. Many range and competition guns use fiber.

  • Tritium: sealed vials that glow on their own. They help find the sights in the dark. A bright weapon light can wash them out, and the glow dims over years.
  • Fiber optic: a rod that gathers ambient light. It is very bright in daylight and does little in the dark. Common on range and competition guns.
  • Hybrids: TruGlo TFX and TFX Pro combine tritium and fiber. Night Fision and Trijicon HD use tritium with a bright day ring.

Carry guns without a dot are usually tritium. Range guns, and guns with a weapon light, are where fiber shows up. A red dot changes the question: the irons then have to be tall enough to see. Height for a dot is suppressor height vs co-witness. Dovetails differ by gun. Glock 17/19/26 and 43/43X/48 are different sizes. See Glock sights.

Questions

Does tritium need light to charge?

No. Tritium vials glow on their own. A photoluminescent ring still needs light.

Can fiber optic sights be used for carry?

Some people carry them with a weapon light. Fiber does little in the dark without light.

What is a hybrid sight?

Tritium plus fiber, or tritium plus a bright day ring. TruGlo TFX is the tritium-and-fiber style.
